Captive Portal?

Douglass was having trouble posting on this forum today (I don't think he has permission yet to post - can someone correct his?) so I am helping him, but this is his question:

I am about to start a project here at YWAM Nashville to spread wifi access our campus. One of the requirements that have been set for this project is that students cannot access the Internet during class times or after a certain time at night.

Hacking a $60 router into a $600 router

Over in the forums there has been a bit of discussions about how wireless is set-up at various YWAM bases around the world (okay, only three people participated, but it was still a discussion). Mike and I are both using Linksys products, with Mike using the more robust Linksys WRT54GL Router and us using the Linksys WAP54G access point. Mike's hacked his router to greatly increase the capabilities of his router (we are still using the standard set-up).

Wireless setup

Hi guys
I thought I would describe our wireless setup at the base in Sweden.
We have ADSL2+ (24mb/s) broadband connecting through a Zyzel 660M modem.

This connectis to a Linksys (Cisco) WRT54GS wireless router using DD-WRT firmware. (I tried Sveasoft but found DD-WRT better and less controversial on the GPL side)

Netgear is Good gear

So you can feel free to scoff at me or throw in your own 2 cents, but for myself I wont buy anything but Netgear Wifi equipment.  I have had almost entirely pure joy from the products and the company.  (However the built in Intel cards with centrino processors are also very good)

Homemade Omni-directional Antenna

For those who like to try out new things this might be interesting. We will soon have one up at the Fortaleza base in Brazil. The prototype of the device is already being tested (see pic)... it's been made out of a male-to-male N type conector. Will keep logging the results here.

P.S.: I didn't realise but the link I put on this entry does not open in IE... there is a problem with the page's xml... so I've added the info on a PDF format...check it out! (credits to Bill who pointed that out - thanks!)

For the Firefox lovers, here goers the link:
