YWAM IT is a community where you can discuss IT and Web issues as they relate to your YWAM Ministry. Through greater cooperation as a mission in these important areas we believe that we can have a greater impact in the nations.

Alternatives to YWAMConnect.com for A Web-Site

With YWAMConnect.com shutting down at the end of the month we want to look at what alternatives are out there for YWAM ministries and staff. My goal in this is NOT to recreate YWAMConnect.com, or set-up anything that is reliant on a central YWAM team or individual to maintain or develop. We will look at a few different services and tools that are readily available, popular and already being used by some YWAM Centres.

YWAMConnect.com is Shutting Down Services

YWAM ConnectMany years ago YWAMConnect.com was presented as a solution for YWAMers looking at setting up a personal ministry web-site. I played briefly with the service because it was being promoted by many YWAM leaders out of the YWAM Kona locaion, but I was very under-whelmed and stopped looking at it after about a week.

Many YWAM staff and ministries however moved over to the service as their primary web-site.

The State of IT in YWAM - A Google Hangout

On Friday March 15 we will be having a Google Hangout / Webinar to talk about Information Technology in YWAM and how it is being used, and where we think it is going...

I know that I have said it before, but this time we will actually be doing the webinar, recording it, and making the recording available as an audio download and as a YouTube video. There could also potentially be a live chat room, depending on how many people want to attend.

These are a few different topics that I would like to talk about:

Google Plus Hangouts for YWAM IT

google_plus_logoI recently set-up a Google+ Community for YWAM. If you haven't already joined I would recommend it...

Last year we did a lot of testing with webinar and other solutions. This year we are hoping to start using Google Hangouts to connect with leaders and other YWAMers to talk about different topics and teachings. The best way to find out about those upcoming events will be through the Google+ group.

Check it out ...

Raspberry Pie Follow Up

I'd just thought I'd follow up on an article that I posted a while back. The small computer, raspberry pie, that could be purchased for extremely cheap was reviewed by techcrunch. If you want to read the article it's here:

It takes a little nerd knowhow to set up but this could be extremely useful for small budget YWAM bases and ministries.

building your own computer case

I would like to build a computer case. But also I'd like to make sure this machine is making too much noise or vibrating its little heart out, either. Has anyone here ever built their own case for a computer? Does anyone have any thoughts on how to do it and could help out with some ideas?
Let me give you a little background to my question.
I am part of a small, pioneering team, soon to set sail (or set road...) to our new location. As such we wont have huge computer needs, as in email server, web server, terminal server, server for this, server for that, etc etc... Still we'll need some hard-drive space to store and share some data, some pictures, and have a place to backup our computers.
The other thing to consider, of course, is office space. As a small team we wont have a full blown office set-up with different rooms including a closet where we could put a noisy computer. Our first office might as well be our living room, or a large enough room in the house, at least for a little while.
And this is where a storage and/or backup server might need to sit and do its duty, as well. Now comes the fun part, which seems to be a little more tricky then I first thought it would be...

I Really Like Google Hangouts On Air

Last week we conducted our test of Google Hangouts On Air. I must say, I am impressed and encouraged by what it offers ...

Here is a run down of the results from the Google Hangouts On Air test:

Google Hangouts On Air Trial for Webinars

For the last few weeks we have been looking into different services for webinars, with the idea of using them to connect our YWAM leaders and teachers with a wide on-line audience. Our trial with AnyMeeting was quite disappointing and most other services out there are paid, or no longer active.

Results of the AnyMeeting YWAM Webinar Test

Two days ago we connected for the test of the AnyMeeting webinar service. There were seven of us that connected, or tried to connect to the service. People were registered from Brasil, Canada, Germany, South Africa, UK and USA. The results of the test were unfortunately, disappointing …

We had quite a few problems with AnyMeeting including:
